Make a Resolution!

It’s that time of year again—time to start planning your New Year’s resolutions. Here’s a list of the most popular resolutions from 2009. Take a cue from last year—maybe you didn’t make some of these resolutions and they can be back on your list for 2010.

1. Get finances in order
Now is a great time to start organizing your bills, begin saving for retirement or simply create a rainy-day or emergency fund.

2. Help others
Nothing makes you feel better than helping others. Go to www.volunteermatch.org to find the volunteer organization you’d like to help out.

3. Stop smoking
According to a study published in a 2004 issue of the British Medical Journal, on average, cigarette smokers die 10 years earlier than non-smokers. There are so many products available on the market to help you stop smoking, so try one out and kick the habit.

4. Learn something new
Keep your mind active and enrich your life at the same time. Many schools in the area offer adult education classes so you can pick up a new hobby like oil painting or photography.

5. Get fit
Always one of the most common resolutions, it seems Americans are constantly striving to be healthier. You can start by adding 30 minutes of activity each day, which will help you get fit, give you a better night’s sleep and increase your energy.

6. Get organized
Deborah Tilson’s columns will help you get your house and your life organized. Check out page 41 for her article about organizing your holiday decorations.

7. Go greener
One of the biggest trends out there right now is the “green” movement, but it doesn’t seem like it’s going to go away any time soon. This resolution may seem daunting, but it’s actually easy to get started and make a small difference. Go to www.worldwatch.org for some simple tips on starting a greener life.

8. Spend more time with family
Sometimes we get so carried away with the stresses in life that we forget the most important part—spending time with our loved ones. Start scheduling family dinners two or three times a week and reconnect with those who love you most.

9. Lose weight
Studies have shown that losing just 10% of your body weight can have huge effects on your health—like reversing or preventing diabetes, lowering cholesterol and reducing your risk for diseases like cancer and heart disease.

10. Enjoy life more
In an uncertain world, we need to remember that each day is a gift. Get out there and take pleasure in what you have!
